Five Minute Friday: Remember

Lately I’ve been reflecting a great deal on the birth on my daughter… over two years ago now. There are things about it I love to remember – meeting her, introducing her to loving and cooing family and friends, and watching her sleeping with her hands out like she was saying, “Wait just a minute.”

But there are also parts that have been difficult to remember, especially the unmet expectations and unexpected events about her labor and delivery, as well as those chaotic, trying first weeks. I had put all of these things out of my head for a reason. It’s in the past.

Still, with #2 arriving in July, I’ve been forced to remember. And it’s fascinating how hurt can linger. How you feel you’ve moved on, but it’s still there… just waiting to be acknowledged.

And yet… the present keeps marching on. And eventually I will have to make decisions about this next experience, recognizing that I am influenced by the past. That I cannot not remember and act like I’ve never done this before.

It’s a unique challenge to balance life in the present with information from the reality of the past and also the true recognition that God will do a new thing.

  2. Found you via 5-Minute Friday. I've often wished that we could have some kind of computers in our Mama-minds, so that we can recall each and every moment with our newborns! There are so many things that slip through our memory banks. Thankfully we remember the most precious ones.

  3. Congrats on your new arrival coming up!!! Found you on FMF and I agree, sometimes those memories pop up just waiting to be dealt with. Thankfully, each baby is different and you may have different memories...like my first son slept perfect all thru the night at one month old...my daughter had colic and was up all night. But time flies as a new mom as well, sometimes too fast! :) God will give you strength to have a newborn again and will give you wonderful memories!

Congratulations on #2, I was surprised how much my birth experience with my second helped me heal and put my experience with #1 into perspective. Blessings!

  5. Thank you all so much for stopping by and the offering of your kind words and congratulations. I have heard other moms say that the second birth was a healing experience as well, and I am encouraged by that thought. :)

  6. I thought about this too - that balance between remembering the sweet yet also the hard parts of an experience. I am praying that your birth this time around would be full of new sweet memories to replace the hard ones from the first time around.

  9. This is really great. It's good to see the good and the bad (though much easier to hone in on one).

Congratulations on your new baby, and I hope this last little bit with just your daughter is extra special.

So thankful to have discovered this FMF community. I look forward to reading more of your posts.
